Label Art for “The Drover”

Label art for Millars Vinyard, Mangawhai for their new port wine. Inspired from the vineyard owner’s late stepfather, Geoff (see photo), a sheep drover upon a horse herding sheep was asked for. A border collie was requested to be included.

Seeing how the art was intended to hold significance to the vineyard, I decided that directly taking the land for inspiration could be a cool idea. I took reference photos from the vineyard website and google earth. The style was asked to be in a sketched pen drawing appearance. Four variations were drafted, incorporating the requested elements.

However the client had a change of heart regarding the art style of the label. Instead of a more ‘sketched’ piece, they requested to have it more heavily stylized. This time just having the horse featuring. I produced the first horse, inspired by Greek black vase painting, but was then asked to reduce it further, resulting in the final piece.
